In this month’s Friday Art Talks series, we invite you to consider a cultural landscape shaped by artists who began their lives outside Australia, and whose subsequent works resonate with influences from both their country of origin and the land they came to call home…

Uncover how the land can chronicle the past, and how experiences of landscapes left behind are carried forever. Join National Gallery curators, Carol Cains and Rebecca Edwards as they discuss a selection of works by artists in the national collection who moved to Australia from elsewhere and responded to the light, space and materiality of their new home.

Carol and Rebecca examine how artists’ memories and sense of self shaped their work, considering how land is not only seen, but felt, having been transformed by distance, translation, and the physical act of making.

Special offer
Community building is at the heart of Australia's multicultural experience, and what better way to celebrate community than to share a meal? We have invited celebrated chefs and food identities from the Canberra region to share a recipe that resonates with their cultural history. Join us for a free Friday Art Talk, and take home a taste of the cultures which inform modern Australia, with recipes from Malaysia (AK Ramakrishna, Head Chef AK’s Diner), Italy (Francesco Petrillo, Fmr Head Chef, The Italian Place) and Lithuania (Nida Degutienė, food blogger, author of Australian Flavours: My Discoveries).
